Canio (Tony) Sbarro

Canio Sbarro was born in Montemelone, Italy and immigrated to Trenton, New Jersey with his wife Theresa Sbarro. Canio from a young age loved a challenge and had a keen sense of adventure. Leaving his family and the beautiful landscape of Montemelone, where the village was the extended family, Canio and Theresa sailed for days on the sea to reach America.

Not able to speak perfect English Canio made friends in the Chambersburg section of Trenton. To his delight, he found himself in the heart of an Italian neighborhood. Here Canio and Theresa felt at home. They were able to speak Italian to friends and slowly learned the English language.

Canio was a proud man, drove a Cadillac and wore the very best of clothes. He join the local clubs, played cards and bocce ball. Canio and his wife Theresa started to raise a family in their Trenton home land. As the family grew, Canio also was one of the best wine makers in the area. Canio loved to make his homemade wine for family and special friends.

As time passed Canio opened his dream of a restaurant serving a Hot Dog on a torpedo roll with potato and peppers. He worked hard with his family by his side. With this tradition of hard work and family, Canio was able to bring that village sense of family to the Chambersburg section of Trenton. From adults to children everyone knew Canio. Canio made the best food and allowed customers to pay their food bills bi weekly or monthly depending on their pay. Neighborhood kids would always be at Casino, eating after school with no money. Hot Dogs, Rickie's, French Fries and a baseball and bat along with the juke box and pin ball machines with Sinatra music always filled the dining area of Casino. This tradition is still practiced today by family to keep the legacy of Canio and Theresa alive today as in 1935. Our customers are our family and friends.

Theresa Sbarro
Wife of Canio (Tony) Sbarro.

Theresa was born in Montemelone, Italy and later, immigrated to Trenton, New Jersey with her husband Canio. She brought with her a deep background of Italian family customs that helped Theresa start a new life with her husband in a different country. Theresa and Canio were true trailblazers. When they arrived in America in 1927 , they were in their late twenties and had a dream of opening a restaurant which they quickly did. That is when they created America's first "Italian" Hot Dog. It was served on a Torpedo Roll.

Theresa was the backbone that allowed Tony to develop their vision and operate their dream of an Italian restaurant. Their home was an apartment above the structure of their business. The close proximity to the business provided them the ability to grow and operate at their highest potential.

Theresa was a beautiful, wise woman. Each and every day Theresa was dressed beautifully from head to toe with exquisite jewelry. She wore a smile from ear to ear. Theresa loved her business and the customers. She did not view the patrons only as customers but also as her friends and an extension of family in this new place (America).

People loved coming to the Casino because it combined delicious eating at a reasonable price. But more than that, they found Theresa to be a loving and caring person who was always ready to have an interesting conversation and share her insight about life. This started relationships that blossomed. The end result was that the Casino Restaurant became the neighborhood restaurant where all would look forward to coming.

Gino Maccaroni Sr.

Gino was born and raised in Trenton, New Jersey. As a young boy, Gino's brother Al heard that Tony just remodeled the Casino Restaurant and was hiring a soda jerk. Gino being employed at the time at a local drugstore was familiar with operating the soda fountains and was ready to make a change. Little did he know how much of change that would turn out to be. He got the job. That was where he met and eventually married Mary, the daughter of the owner and that is where he would work from 1946 and eventually having become the owner himself.

On that first day, Canio sent his son, Michael to pick up Gino at 2:00 pm for work. Gino started working at 2:00 pm till 2:00 am that first week. Gino worked for 80 hours for $20.00 that week. Gino's regular schedule was after school from 4:00 pm to 12:00 midnight but many times put in longer hours at the thriving restaurant. This was a very difficult schedule for someone who was also attending Trenton Central High School at the time. As some would say, Gino got the job and the girl. Gino and Mary were married in 1950 and Gino took over the operations of the Casino Restaurant.

Gino was always known for having a great sense of humor and even today he still enjoys a good laugh. Gino has been retired for a few years but still has that same baby face and looks like he could start work again tomorrow if he wanted too. He is enjoying his retirement and keeps himself quite busy with his many hobbies, listening to Frank Sinatra music and rooting for his beloved Yankees.

Mary Maccaroni
Wife of Gino Maccaroni and daughter of Canio and Theresa Sbarro

Mary is the only daughter of Canio and Theresa Sbarro. She had 4 brothers who also worked at the Casino Restaurant at one time or another. The Navy or other passions took the boys away from the restaurant and the business. Mary was counted on to work at the restaurant every day after school. Her life was the business.

Mary shared her mom's good sense of business and management. But Mary also loved to dance, wear beautiful clothes and jewelry and have fun when not working.

Mary married Gino Maccaroni at the age of eighteen. At that time, Mary was working as a secretary when her father, Canio asked her to leave her job and help him with the business. Mary without question came to help her family and the business. This was the foundation instilled in her, God and then the "Family and the Business".

From that point, Mary never left the business and she and her husband operated the Casino Restaurant and built into one of the most successful family businesses in the area that it is today.
